The latest episode of Saturday Night Live spoofed the new Star Trek movie with a hilarious skit that poked fun at the billionaire astronauts.
The star trek ego quest youtube is a video that spoofs the popular TV show. It’s hosted by Seth Rogen and it has been viewed more than 30 million times.
Saturday Night Live has never been afraid to mock Star Trek… Starting in their first season (1976), when JOHN BELUSHI, CHEVY CHASE, DAN AKROYD, and ELLIOTT GOULD starred in the unforgettable “Last Voyage of the Starship Enterprise,” the show quickly became a fan favorite. Since then, their parodies have been hit-or-miss, with mixed reviews for sketches like “The Restaurant Enterprise,” “Love Boat: The Next Generation,” “Emergency Room/Worf, M.D.” and the most recent “Lost Episode,” which starred CHRIS PINE as Captain Kirk and BOBBY MOYNIHAN as Spock’s vulgar half-brother from Queens, Spocko. THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS A STAR TREK!
The previous one was also the most recent Star Trek spoof until this past Saturday night, when OWEN WILSON hosted the 47th season of Saturday Night Live (c’mon, you’ve GOT to have a Star Trek skit when the season is 47!). Take a look at this:
“It’s hilarious because it’s true,” Homer Simpson would remark.
I’d want to offer two editorial remarks, if you’ll humor me for a minute…
First and foremost, billionaires have recently become a lot more fascinating! Granted, none of them are dressing up as a bat and battling crime in Gotham City at night, nor are they inventing flying armor and commanding a squad of superheroes. Building rockets to carry people and other cargo into space is still quite amazing. A “typical” millionaire a century ago looked like this:
Andrew Mellon, Henry Ford, and John D. Rockerfeller
These individuals were remarkable in every way—successful businessmen, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, patrons of the arts and sciences, and even one a Treasury Secretary. But were they enjoyable? No concerns about making cars more accessible to the general public or establishing a world-class institution… but amusement?
With this guy, billionaires have more fun:
WILLIAM RANDOPH HEAST is who you’re looking for… For God’s sake, the guy built a friggin’ CASTLE on the central California coast!!! Then he’d invite world-famous celebrities, political leaders, and bright minds to come and stay, with the sole condition that they attend community meals and other meetings to share their views, ideas, and perspectives with one another and with him. Seriously, if you ever get the opportunity to visit Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California, and read about its history, do it. It’s incredible!
Who could forget about this guy…?
That’s the well-known HOWARD HUGHES… He was a filmmaker, an industrialist, a pilot, a jet-setting international playboy, and ultimately a mentally ill eccentric who spent his final years as an obsessive germophobe who walked about in tissue box slippers. But, before succumbing to O.C.D., Howard Hughes was a larger-than-life celebrity millionaire (Tony Stark’s father Howard Stark in the Marvel movies was based on Hughes), who sparked American imaginations with his cutting-edge films and even more cutting-edge planes. Hughes’ H-1 Racer was the last non-military aircraft to establish a speed record (in 1935), a mark he attained while piloting (and ultimately crashing) the plane himself.
Hughes Aircraft would build and fly the H-4 Hercules (also known as the “Spruce Goose”), the world’s largest-ever flying boat with the greatest wingspan of any aircraft produced for another 72 years a decade later!
THOSE were some entertaining millionaires! Then came BILL GATES and WARREN BUFFET, a slew of Saudi princes and Japanese businessmen, and a slew of obnoxious dot-com CEOs who became billions virtually overnight. And, although I admire Bill Gates’ generosity, most billionaires nowadays appear to be satisfied with owning sports teams, purchasing REALLY costly homes, vehicles, aircraft, and yachts, and donating outrageous sums to CPACs to support political candidates… and/or running for public office.
So, in a world where the wealth of the top 0.1 percent of Americans is almost equal to that of the bottom 90% (according to Politifact), billionaires are enjoying a lifestyle that the overwhelming bulk of us will never be able to properly dream about. However, almost every individual living today grew up at least partially, if not entirely, during the space era…and beyond into the Internet age. Space has beckoned to us and touched us in ways that earlier generations had never known.
As a result, today’s Howard Hugheses are unquestionably JEFF BEZOS, SIR RICHARD BRANSON, and ELON MUSK… MARK ZUCKERBERG, MARK CUBAN, MICHAEL BLOOMBERG, DONALD TRUMP, or any number of rich Middle Eastern or Southeast Asian billionaires, European royals, Russian oligarchs, or those who have made billions overnight on crypto-currency and NFTs, much more so.
Whether you think Bezos, Branson, and Musk’s “civilian space race” is simply a middle-aged ego-fest to make up for the smaller, uh, rocket size, the fact remains that this stuff is COOL!!! They’ve taken what was once the exclusive domain of a few national governments across the globe and opened it up to the private sector, in addition to bringing internet shopping and electric cars into the mainstream (and saving The Expanse from early cancellation doom). They’re doing it with style!
Indeed, Bezos will become the first millionaire to take a Shat in space next week (if everything goes well), while the 90-year-old actor who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk is set to become the oldest astronaut in human history.
Come on, my comrades in the Trek! Wouldn’t you want to take Captain Kirk for a few orbits around the globe if you were a millionaire and constructed your own rocket? Maybe you’d go with Picard.
The second and last point I’d want to make comes from the parody video itself. As I watched the skit, I saw that SNL host Owen Wilson’s brother, LUKE WILSON, appears as Jeff Bezos’ brother for a short appearance. (And, by the way, anybody who isn’t watching Luke on the CW’s DC’s Stargirl is missing out on one of the greatest superhero programs on television!)
Anyway, when I examined Luke Wilson in his space suit, I couldn’t help but note how much he like JOSHUA IRWIN from the Star Trek fan fiction AVALON UNIVERSE…
Have you ever been separated from your parents at birth? Joshua Irwin and Luke Wilson… In space, there are brothers!
If you believe these two are twins, please give $10 to the Avalon Universe GoFundMe right now. Yes, I’m not ashamed (I swear I’ll stop promoting their campaign once they achieve their $20K target!)…
