This is a story about a woman named Sandra Oh. Sandra is a person who left her home country to find herself in a new world. A world with no language but her. A world with no job but her. A world with no family but her. A world with no friends but her.
After 12 years in the business, Sandra Oh is following in her father’s footsteps by starring in her first starring role in the new CBC Television mystery drama, “The Good Doctor.”Her character, Dr. Cristina Yang, is a brilliant pediatric surgeon whose fierce ethics lead her to question everything around her, including the hospital where she works. Oh plays Cristina Yang in the series, which is set to premiere in fall 2017.
The Chair is a new game show that will be premiering on MIP TV in the fall. It is a twist on a classic game show format, with a twist: it features a rotating cast of celebrities each week, who will interact with a contestant in a unique way. This week, we have a celebrity with a unique challenge for a contestant, and that celebrity is Sandra Oh!
The butt that sits on this chair is very uncomfortable.
Sandra Oh and Jay Duplass star in the lead roles.
Amanda Peet and Annie Julia Wyman are the creators.
It’s never easy for trailblazing women. Being the First Woman has its own set of challenges and unwelcome attention, particularly when it comes to running an English department. Sandra Oh plays Ji-Yoon Kim in The Chair, who discovers firsthand the dangers of taking the lead.
The Head follows Ji-Yoon as she begins her first year as chair of the English department at Pembroke University, a fictitious institution. The series follows Ji-roller Yoon’s coaster of family responsibilities, decreasing classroom attendance, challenging senior faculty, even more unpleasant administration, and a self-destructive colleague over the course of six short episodes.
Do you think that’s a lot for six half-hour episodes? That’s correct. The needless intricacy of Ji-new Yoon’s job has her flustered. Her status as the first female chair is repeatedly exploited against her, making her feel obliged to satisfy everyone. It doesn’t work (because nothing does), but it’s interesting to see this cultural phenomena unfold on so many levels.
Of course, Sandra Oh is fantastic as Ji-Yoon. With just the right amount of empathy and irritation, she navigates her connection with her young daughter, elderly father, and colleagues.
The supporting cast is also fantastic, with Holland Taylor and Bob Balaban as old school teachers trying to make their lectures relevant to their pupils giving standout performances. Nana Mensah, who plays Yaz, bears the weight of being a young black woman attempting to get tenure in a system that does not acknowledge or value her abilities.
The Chair’s pace is sometimes taxing, reflecting Ji-existence. Yoon’s When it does slow down, there are frequently emotional and humorous moments. Jay Duplass (Transparent) plays Bill Dobson, a tenured professor mourning the loss of his wife and the leaving of his daughter to college. He and Ji-Yoon are close friends who are negotiating many levels of their relationship at the same time. He’s also in hot water with the government.
This first season of The Chair was fantastic. The story is current, and the performance is excellent. My only genuine issue is that there isn’t enough. There will be more episodes, and each episode will be longer. I get that we’re experiencing Ji-strain Yoon’s and speed, but there are many instances when the characters and circumstances might benefit from additional time.
Finally, I don’t feel as emotionally invested in the characters as I would want to be going into the second season. I don’t know whether there will be one, but I hope there will be, and I hope they will allow us more character development and time to flesh out the complex themes the series wishes to address.
Season 1 of The Chair is now available on Netflix.
